Men win three matches, women fall to Walsh

Story first appeared in the March 26, 2015 edition of the Edinboro University Spectator, which was distributed on campus and around the town of Edinboro.

After a less-than-ideal performance at the Spring Tennis Fest over spring break, head coach Lee Underwood wanted to see how his men’s team would respond in its first few matches.

At week’s end, it seemed as though the Scots were recovering just fine.

The Edinboro men’s tennis team swept its three matches this past week, scoring wins over District of Columbia, Millersville and West Chester.

Edinboro sneaked by D.C. 5-4, before shutting out Millersville in its PSAC opener 9-0 and defeating West Chester 6-3 to complete the trifecta.

The women’s team fell to Walsh 9-0 in its lone match this week.

Head coach Lee Underwood note that he thought his team played well against District of Columbia, but was weary that it almost let the match slip away.

“We lost a break at #2 doubles and that let them back in the match,” Underwood said. “We went down 2-1 after doubles and needed to win four of six singles to win. We need to take care of our opportunities.”

The men easily defeated Millersville in its first conference match of the season. The Mauraders are still searching for their first win of the season.

Boro finished off the week against West Chester and according to Underwood, capped it off on a high note.

“We won two of the three doubles matches,” he said. “I think it may have been our best overall doubles play from a two and three doubles team at the same time, this season.”

The tandems of Matias Aignasse and Bruno Borja, as well as Juan Estepa and Daniel Galimany, won 8-2 and 8-1, respectively, in their doubles matches.

Freshman Vitor Albanese had himself a successful week individually as well. The Brazil native was named the PSAC Western division player of the week last week. Albanese went 3-0 at #1 singles in the team’s three matches. Additionally, he teamed up with Brandon Romain and was 2-1 in doubles play.

His stellar single play included a 6-3, 6-0 win against Rok Bozic of District of Columbia, a 6-2, 6-2 victory against Millersville’s Jody Sambrick Jr. and a 6-1, 6-2 triumph over Jared Howatt of West Chester.

Albanese is now 9-2 on the season in singles play, tied for the team led in wins.

“Vitor is a very solid player,” I think he will do well the rest of the season. He’s lost two matches, but one of them was a three-setter and the other one he lost to a nationally-ranked player from Palm Beach Atlantic. He has done well for us.”
Moving forward in the schedule Underwood said that he hopes to have the matches back in Edinboro as he is going to, “make every effort to have them here, from here on out.”

The men visit Fairmont State on Saturday and West Virginia Wesleyan on Sunday. The ladies are scheduled to host Slippery Rock on Thursday at 3 p.m. before hitting the road to face Charleston on Saturday, West Virginia Wesleyan on Sunday and Clarion on March 31. Underwood noted that if the SRU match on Thursday is postponed, it will be rescheduled for Friday.
