Tennis gears up for first PSAC action

Story first appeared on on Sept. 9, 2015 and in the Edinboro University Spectator on Sept. 10, 2015.

Edinboro’s men’s and women’s tennis teams will be competing in the 2015 PSAC Singles and Doubles Championships this weekend. It’s safe to say they are well prepared.

The Fighting Scots warmed up for the upcoming championships at the Nancy and Harvey Heath Gator Invitational, at Allegheny College, and triumphed, being crowned tournament team champions.

“I’ve been doing this for, this is my 25th year, and I haven’t had a better starting point in 25 years with two teams of doubles from the start,” head men’s and women’s tennis coach Lee Underwood said. “I thought we were playing much greater than typical freshman do.”

That solid start should bode well for the Scots, who will head east to Bloomsburg University for the 2015 PSAC Singles and Doubles Championships, which are slated for Saturday and Sunday. Edinboro does come in as the defending champions for men’s doubles. The duo of Bruno Borja and Brandon Romain won the title over teammates Matias Aignasse and Juan Estepa in the championship match a year ago. Underwood admitted the Scots had a slight advantage last year.

“We had a bit of the upper hand as those two double teams played together a year before,” he said. “I felt like that was a big plus versus some of the other teams. A lot of them had new players together. I think we will be tough. We got two new doubles team this year. I think it will be exciting. We can hold our own with anyone.”

Although this is a championship event, Underwood said he views it as a “tune-up” himself. “I tell them that this is our PSAC individuals and it is a good tune-up for our ITA regionals,” Underwood said in a phone interview.

“We are looking to have a strong showing and get a good look at the PSAC and where we are right now.” Underwood also noted that he puts more stock in spring events than fall events, but admits they’re all “building blocks.”

The aforementioned regionals will finish off this month in Erie with the women competing Sept. 19-21 and the men’s action happening Sept. 25-27.
