Albanese falls in regional finals

Story first appeared on edinboronow.com on Sept. 30, 2015 and in print in the Edinboro University Spectator on Oct. 1, 2015.

“Without a doubt he is the guy to beat in this region, day in and day out.”

Those were the words of Edinboro head tennis coach Lee Underwood, who did not shy away from praising sophomore, Vitor Albanese.

Albanese’s play backed up Underwood’s talk as the Brazil native finished second at the 2015 USTA/ ITA Atlantic Regional Championships this past weekend in Erie.

“I thought he played pretty well,” Underwood said. “The guy he played in the finals he has beaten before.”

The reigning PSAC Men’s Tennis Athlete of the Year and the current PSAC Men’s Singles Champion was the number one seed in the tournament and faced off against the number two seed in the bracket, Baptist Perrin of West Liberty, in the finals. Perrin upended Albanese, 7-6 (4) and 6-4.

“The guy served phenomenal,” Underwood said of Perrin. “It took that kind of effort to beat him. He served well the entire tournament. It was played indoors and it was a tough task for us.”

Albanese cruised through the first two rounds. He defeated West Chester’s Tony Deimler, 6-1, 6-4 in the first round. He then faced a PSACwest foe, Travis Beck of Mercyhurst, in the second round, and won, 6-0 and 6-3.

The quarterfinals caused a little bit more trouble for Edinboro’s top men’s singles player, but he prevailed. He topped Alec Foote of Charleston, 7-5, 7-6 (5). He faced another Charleston player in the semi-finals. He defeated Axel Wahl, 6-4, 6-0.

Daniel Fernandez, Mauricio Santos and Mateus Santos also competed in the men’s singles bracket. Fernandez was the lone Scot of the trio to advance past the first round, but he fell in the second.

Edinboro was also represented in the men’s doubles bracket. Albanese paired with freshman Kevin Mboko and the duo advanced all the way to the semifinal match before falling to Martin Moncayo and Perrin, of West Liberty, 9-7.

Underwood noted that he liked the performances of Mboko and Fernandez, among others, this past weekend.

The Scots return to action with a home match on Oct. 10 against John Carroll at noon.
